Why I Want to be a Social Worker

Why I want to be a Social Worker?
Have you ever wonder about what you want to do in life or what will be the best career choice for you. Well, I’m a victim of that, upon applying for Tuskegee University, I was caught in a situation similar to that. I didn’t have a clue about what I want to do with my future. My senior year was coming to an end and, my mind still wasn’t made up. My first choice was going to the military service but, then I had to think logically for a backup plan. I started questioning myself, what if the military not for me, or what if I don’t make it pass basic training. Then, I started thinking about other solutions and the thought of school enter my mind. I finally made the decision to try school first and, if that didn’t work then I would join the military. By me being a very intelligent person, I knew that I would make it in school. I must admit my nervousness got the best of me and made me a very confused person; my thoughts and ideas were all over the place. So, I begin asking questions pertaining to school and possible career opportunities that I can see myself enjoying. What I like to do the most is helping others who are in need for assistance; the idea finally came to me I want to be a social worker.
Once enrolled in my first year social work courses and hearing all the different roles social workers play, I was like yes I made the best decision. A person with a social work can do just about anything educator, counselor, or advocate for people. Although, my main reason for choosing social work as my future career, I was also concerned about the social problems that were happening in my community today. Homelessness, violence, and the right of humans are some of the main issues that I am concern with in today’s society.
Homelessness is when a person cannot find a job and unable to live in a house, trailer, or an apartment. They are often force to live in a homeless shelter, abandon house, or even on the streets. There are many people in this town that are homeless and the only thought that crosses my mind, wait until I get my degree I will be able to help you. Although there not many jobs here in Tuskegee but, I will be able to get them some assistance. Honestly, I feel that a person become poor because of several reasons and one in particular is not having the resources. This is when a social worker comes in the picture; they are able to help a person find a job, find financial assistance, and find somewhere for them to live.
My second concern is violence. Violence is physical force used to injure a person. This is a big issue here in Macon County; almost every day I hear something about a person died from gun shots or they have been stabbed.  The sad part about these issues is that it is mostly consisting of teens that are committing these crimes. If you are able to change a person, you should try your best because the crime rates will only rise. My values concerning human beings are very simple; each person is unique in their own way. When I begin working in the field of social work, I will fully respect each of my clients.
I have been in school for three years and throughout my years of schooling I have learned a lot about social work and the responsibility of a social worker. What can I contribute to the profession of social work? There is a lot that I can contribute, my personality, my knowledge of social work and the skills that I have gained throughout my years. My first experience with helping people where in high school, as part of the JROTC department one of the requirements were for us to go to the VA and assist the veterans. I also had the opportunity to work with some of the students here in Macon County as a community service project.
There are many strengths and weakness that I need to address. Learning more about interviewing skills is one of my weaknesses that I must adhere to first. Now that I’m about to start my junior internship, the interviewing skills will be very important during the course of my education.  When there are weakness, there are strengths and my strengths are being a determine person. Throughout my years of college there have been so many obstacles in my path but, I have managed to succeed them all. I will not stop until I reach the top, being motivated is strengths that I also wish to address. I want to show my instructors, field director, and field supervisor that I am eager to learn the necessities that will make me an excellent social worker in my future career; the only way I can achieve this task is to keep motivating myself.
